President's Message:

FALL 2010

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. ~ Lao-Tzu

Courtney Hunter Courtney Hunter, President
San Diego Miramar College Paralegal Group

Greetings!

As we settle into our Fall classes, I would like to welcome you to a new school year at San Diego Miramar College. I am proud to be a part of the Paralegal Group for this upcoming year, and I look forward to working with you in our continuing efforts in making the San Diego Miramar College Paralegal Group, (SDMCPG) an organization that is known throughout the community! Our goals for this year include increasing membership, participating in campus-wide events at Miramar College, continuing to offer scholarships, keeping our paralegal students informed about upcoming events, issues in the legal community and at our college.

"I acknowledge my duty to be in good standing, offer my ultimate allegiance, and promise to participate to my fullest potential. I will strive for the continued growth and success of our dynamic team, and I will help make a substantial difference in our Paralegal Group, while being a strong and positive voice in the legal community."

One of the main goals of SDMCPG this year is to help its members become more active in the legal community, and this cannot be achieved without the support of volunteers and members like you! Over the summer, SDMCPG members provided volunteer support at the state-wide California Alliance of Paralegal Associations (CAPA) conference, hosted by the San Diego Paralegal Association (SDPA), and held at the Bahia here in San Diego. Our members were able to network with practicing paralegals, gaining insight and advice from paralegals who work across the state. In addition, SDMCPG volunteers got to sit in on lectures that covered eDiscovery, corporate law, law & motion, bankruptcy, family law, administrative law, criminal defense, subpoenas, and even the history behind California Business & Professions Code § 6450.

This Fall, SDMCPG is excited to take part in more events, on and off campus, including Fall Fest, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraising walk, Evening With the Experts lectures, and other Associated Students activities. At each SDMCPG meeting, you will be updated with what is going on not only on campus, but also with upcoming events through professional organizations like San Diego Paralegal Association (SDPA), the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA), and the San Diego County Public Law Library (SDCPLL). SDMCPG will also be hosting its third annual holiday party where members can get to know each other in a more relaxed social setting.

We will be maintaining our fundraising efforts in order to continue providing scholarships to three deserving students at the end of the school year. Last year each student was awarded $300.00 for their individual academic achievements (Reaching Above and Beyond Scholarship), their demonstration of leadership (Lillian Nahar Scholarship), and their dedication to helping their fellow students (Andrew Vanderhoek Scholarship). These scholarships will be available again this year with your help in fundraising.

I wish you all joy this year and the best of luck with your education!

Courtney Hunter,
President
San Diego Miramar College Paralegal Group
